3,000 Trees Take Root in Lucknow

Tree plantation is among the most visible ways Lions Clubs are responding to a wider environmental mandate across MD 321. Their efforts also encompass water conservation, cleanliness drives, responsible waste management and the reduction of single-use plastic. At a time when rising temperatures, polluted air, declining groundwater, plastic waste and shrinking green cover threaten Indian cities, Lions are translating concern into sustained community action.

A recent initiative by Mahanagar Lucknow Lions Club, District 321B1, demonstrates what such action can achieve at scale. In partnership with Eldeco Real Estate Company, the club planted 3,000 trees along New Jail Road in Lucknow. Unlike small saplings, these trees were selected for the substantial canopy and shade they will provide as they continue to grow. District Governor Paramjeet Singh joined club members for the plantation drive.

The collaboration offers a model with the potential to be replicated elsewhere: a corporate organisation contributing its resources and reach to a Lions-led initiative and becoming a stakeholder in the city’s green cover. As the trees mature, they can help absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants, reduce dust and heat, retain soil moisture, provide shelter for birds, and support local biodiversity. Together, they form a living infrastructure project whose value will grow with time.

The true success of any plantation drive, however, lies in how many trees survive and flourish. Mahanagar Lucknow Lions Club has committed to regular watering, protective tree guards and continued monitoring, particularly through Lucknow’s dry season.

The club also plans to involve nearby schools and encourage young people to serve as Green Ambassadors. Their participation can extend responsibility for the trees beyond the club’s membership—and into the generation that may one day grow up under their shade.
