When the landslides hit Wayanad’s Chooramala valley, it changed lives in minutes. Homes crumbled, families were separated, and many women suddenly found themselves alone, responsible for their children’s future.
That’s when Lions from District 317A stepped in with a practical idea. Working with the local government in Wayanad, they learned that these women could earn a steady income through government-supported tailoring work – if they had the right tools to start.

In October 2024, District Governor N. Mohan Kumar sent out a simple message to all clubs: “Let’s help these families get back on their feet.” The clubs responded with enthusiasm. Within weeks they had raised enough funds to buy 82 sewing machines.
Following the smooth coordination by PDG Dr. P.R.S. Chetan, District Governor N. Mohan Kumar distributed the sewing machines to beneficiaries on December 7, 2024 in the presence of government officials and Lion leaders.
The initiative drew praise from Shri Misal Sagar Bharat IAS, Sub Collector, Mananthavady Wayanad. “Your timely assistance and compassionate gesture will play a vital role in the rehabilitation efforts, helping the affected families regain their livelihood and start anew.” he wrote in a heartfelt note of thanks. “The support extended by you and your esteemed team reflects the true spirit of community service and solidarity.”
Today in homes across Wayanad, that promise is being fulfilled, as families begin to rebuild their lives.
