When six-year-old Priya smiles during an art session at Ummedein Sewashram, you wouldn’t guess she’s fighting one of life’s toughest battles. Her drawing, bright with hope and courage, reflects the spirit that Bhubaneswar Lotus Lions Club, District 322C4, seeks to nurture in every child battling cancer.
“Government schemes cover medical costs, but many children still struggle after surgery because they don’t get proper nutrition,” explained a member. It is to help bridge this critical gap that the club established the CAN-CURE Trust this Lions year. The focus of the newly registered trust is clear: helping underprivileged children get the nutrition and emotional support they need during – and post – their treatment.

In September 2024, as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the club’s work took shape in two key projects. On September 19, 2024 Lions members brought two months’ worth of groceries and Pediasure packets to 30 children at Ummedein Sewashram. Four days later, they provided similar support to 22 young patients at SUM Hospital.
Since 2020, the Bhubaneswar Lotus Lions Club has witnessed how children fight harder when they know someone cares.
The club has been a steady presence at both facilities, supporting about 80 cancer patients each year. They don’t just bring supplies – they bring comfort and cheer. Regular visits include art sessions and games, and the Lions members join the children in celebrating festivals like Raksha Bandhan and Diwali.
Back at the art session, Priya adds finishing touches to her painting. Like many others here, she’s not just getting nutrition supplements – she’s getting the strength that comes from knowing she’s not alone.
