Bihar, a state in Eastern India, deals with recurring floods almost every year, damaging local communities and infrastructure. These floods are primarily caused by heavy monsoon rains and the overflow of rivers like the Ganges and the Kosi. From July 15, 2025, through October 3, 2025, severe flooding devastated several areas near Bhagalpur, Bihar. With over 20,000 people injured or missing and 30,000 homes destroyed, Lions immediately lent a hand.
In order to start rebuilding the community, Lions used a US$15,000 Emergency Grant to provide essential items to those in need. A total of 1,500 families were given groceries including flour, rice and biscuits. Packs of baby milk were distributed to children in affected families, and approximately 2,000 families received clothing kits. “I lost everything in the floods, but thanks to Lions, my children were able to get food, milk, and clothes when we needed it most. It gave us hope to continue. We are forever grateful,” Anjali Kuman, a resident of Bhagalpur, said.
With so many houses destroyed, families were left without a home. To provide temporary shelter, Lions supplied around 350 families with tarpaulins. “The tarpaulin shelter has helped us survive the past few weeks. Without it, we would have had no place to stay. Thank you to Lions for making sure we had enough food and water,” Ram Singh, a citizen in Katihar, said.
The project helped lead this community towards recovery and gave a sense of security to those affected by the disaster, especially vulnerable victims such as children, the elderly and women.
Kishore Yadav, from Bhagalpur, said, “I thought we would not get any help after the floods. When the Lions arrived with supplies, I was in tears. They not only gave us food but also helped us with basic needs like clothes. We are now rebuilding our lives with hope.”
With LCIF Emergency Grants, Lions can provide vital relief for communities devastated by hurricanes, floods, fires and other major events.
