Berhampur Gold Lions Club Addresses Gender-Based Violence Through Awareness

In the wake of the deeply disturbing rape case at R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, the Berhampur Gold Lions Club of District 322C4 took a proactive step to address the systemic challenges of gender-based violence. Their recent awareness program at Sashi Bhusan Rath Government Women’s College aimed to confront the patriarchal structures that perpetuate violence and inequality.

Distinguished speakers brought nuanced perspectives to the discussion. Dr. Sangita Babu, a retired principal, delved into the pervasive impact of patriarchy, emphasizing how societal norms often silence women’s voices.

She highlighted how change begins with challenging traditional power dynamics and recognizing women’s full potential as independent individuals.

Dr. Binayak Pattanaik, a law professor, provided critical legal insights, discussing protective legislation like the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1994 and laws addressing domestic violence and workplace harassment. His presentation underscored the legal frameworks designed to safeguard women’s rights and challenge systemic oppression.

More than 200 students participated in the program. As a symbolic gesture of hope and renewal, participants planted 250 saplings—a metaphor for nurturing growth, resilience, and future possibilities.

The program’s ultimate goal was not to instill fear, but to empower young women with knowledge, confidence, and agency to shape their own narratives and challenge existing societal norms. The club proposes to conduct similar programs in three more local colleges soon.
