Forty schools, one district-wide campaign, and a permanent solution to a problem that was keeping girls out of the classroom.
Surveys conducted in government schools across the country have identified a recurring reason for absenteeism among girls in Classes 8 to 12: the lack of safe and private toilet facilities, especially during menstruation. Many schools had only shared toilets with unreliable water supply, broken doors, and no safe way to dispose of sanitary napkins. Recognizing the impact of these conditions on girls’ education, the Pink Toilet Project was launched in District 3241A by District Governor P. Manisekar PMJF. This district-wide initiative focuses on constructing dedicated toilet blocks for girls in government schools with the highest enrolment and the greatest need.
Each Pink Toilet costs approximately ₹3 lakh and is built as a permanent addition to the school rather than a temporary solution. Every unit is a purpose-built sanitation block with proper ventilation and natural light, two urinals and one western-style toilet to reduce waiting time during school breaks, tiled flooring, running water, electrical lighting, an automated sanitary napkin vending machine, and a built-in incinerator for the safe disposal of used napkins. Finished in pink, the buildings are immediately recognizable as dedicated facilities for girls.
An LCIF grant of ₹1.29 crore formed the foundation of the project. Region Chairpersons and Zone Chairpersons led a district-wide fundraising campaign through advertisements in the District Directory 2025–2026 to raise the required matching contribution. Individual Lions Clubs sponsored units within their respective service areas, giving each club direct oversight of construction and long-term upkeep.
To ensure consistency across all locations, a technical committee of Lion engineers and architects standardized the design, vetted contractors, and monitored quality throughout construction. Sites were selected in consultation with the District Education Department, prioritizing government schools with the highest enrolment of girls and the most urgent need for improved sanitation facilities.
A total of 40 Pink Toilet units were completed by June 2026. As schools reopened, the facilities were inaugurated in phases across the district. At each school, District 3241A’s Service team and local Leo Clubs conducted awareness sessions on menstrual hygiene and the importance of hand-washing. Teachers were also trained to operate and maintain the sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators, ensuring that the facilities could be managed independently by the schools.
The project’s impact extends well beyond construction. The toilet units, vending machines, and incinerators are designed to serve students for years to come, while teacher training helps ensure that routine maintenance does not depend on continued Lions involvement. District 3241A’s technical committee has also begun documenting the design specifications so the model can be replicated by other districts at a comparable cost.
Today, 40 government schools have permanent sanitation facilities built exclusively for girls—facilities that did not exist before. By combining thoughtful design, sustainable maintenance, and district-wide collaboration, District 3241A has created infrastructure that supports the health, dignity, and uninterrupted education for thousands of students.
