Pioneering Hope

Punganur Noble Lions Club’s Dialysis Centre brings quality care to rural India.

At first glance, the blue and grey building in Punganur, a small town in Andhra Pradesh, may seem unremarkable. However, step inside, and you’ll discover the life-saving work happening within its walls. This is the Dialysis Centre established by Punganur Noble Lions Club of District 317E.

This project, likely the first of its kind to be managed by a rural club in India, emerged in response to the alarming increase in patients requiring dialysis in Punganur and its surrounding areas.

Conceived in 2015, the project gained significant momentum two years later with a $100,000 grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). This, combined with local fundraising efforts, propelled the initiative forward. By the time the centre was inaugurated on May 6, 2021, the total investment had reached Rs.2.75 crores.

A partnership with Apollo Dialysis Clinics and the National Health Mission enables the centre to provide high quality care to patients, at no cost. Equipped with 1 dialysis machines, the facility conducts between 30 to 35 dialysis sessions daily across three shifts.

In just over three years, the centre has conducted more than 30,000 dialysis sessions. With each session typically costing around Rs.4,000/- the centre has effectively provided an estimated Rs.12 crores worth of life-saving treatment, free of charge.

Located on Punganur-Maddanapalli Road near Rampalli village, the centre’s location ensures it serves a wide demographic. Its registration under the National Health Mission further amplifies its reach, allowing any Indian citizen to access its services.

The project’s success is a result of community collaboration. From the initial encouragement of the District Cabinet and guidance of PID Krishna Reddy to the ongoing support with the Government of Andhra Pradesh and former Minister Peddireddy Ramchandra Reddy every stakeholder played a crucial role.

Spearheading the initiative is Dr. P. Shiva, who serves as both grant administrator and Service Trust Chairperson. Under his stewardship, the project has become a source of pride for Punganur Noble Lions Club and the entire district.
