Bright smiles illuminated the faces of students at Asansol Braille Academy as they clutched their new Braille kits – important tools that would provide them a tactile learning experience. Members of the Asansol East Lions Club, District 322C3, watched with a sense of satisfaction, happy for having played their part in helping the visually impaired students expand their learning horizons. Excited about the Taylor frame, two students showcased the practical applications that would now enhance their daily studies.
The journey to this heartwarming moment began on Independence Day. After hoisting the national flag at their permanent service project at Asansol East Eye Hospital, the Club President and a member visited the Asansol Braille Academy, seeking some untouched points of service in need of support. Initially planning to sponsor lunch, they discovered a more profound need through conversations with caregivers.
“These students have tremendous intelligence and creativity,” explained one caregiver. “But many families struggle financially to provide specialized learning materials.” The club members quickly understood that just as books and pens are essential for sighted students, Braille kits are fundamental for visually impaired learners.
The proposal to donate 30 Braille kits for language and mathematics learning was promptly presented at the next board meeting. Club members enthusiastically embraced the initiative, with many offering personal contributions alongside funds from the Club Activity account.

The 30-day wait for the specially ordered kits only heightened the members’ anticipation. When the day finally arrived, the Academy welcomed them warmly. Students sang, accompanied by musical instruments, demonstrating their talents. Their display of medals and certificates from state and national competitions testified to their remarkable abilities in games and musical performances.
The celebration concluded with a delicious lunch, but the true reward was witnessing the immediate impact of their contribution. Club members left with a renewed commitment to support these talented students throughout their educational journey.
