Driving Change: District 318B’s Vision for Women’s Empowerment

Lions District 318B is creating pathways to independence for women and girls through two targeted initiatives in this Lions year. At the heart of these programs lies a simple truth: mobility creates opportunity.

The flagship ‘She Auto’ program puts women in the driver’s seat—literally. By providing electric auto-rickshaws at subsidized rates, with Lions Clubs covering 10% of the cost and facilitating bank loans, the program enables women to build sustainable livelihoods. Fifteen drivers have already started their journeys of economic independence, with the program aiming to support 100 women. Beyond individual benefits, these electric vehicles contribute to cleaner city air.

This focus on mobility extends to the next generation through the ‘Her Cycle’ initiative. What began as a plan to donate 100 bicycles to schoolgirls during the cabinet installation has flourished into a movement, with clubs across the district embracing this initiative enthusiastically and making it their own. Over 200 bicycles have been distributed so far, eliminating distance as a barrier to education and allowing girls to reach their schools safely and reliably.

Under District Governor R. Venkitachalam’s guidance, these initiatives reflect District 318B’s understanding that empowerment starts with access—to transportation, to education, and to economic opportunities. The district’s approach empowers women and girls to move forward, both literally and figuratively, toward greater independence.
