The Regional Sports Centre in Kochi resounded with loud cheers as the winners lifted the trophy high. There were large smiles on the faces of the children as well as Lions as they celebrated not just victory, but the spirit of inclusion and achievement that defined Lionathlon 2025.
The event was organized by District 318C under the guidance of District Governor Rajan N. Namboothiri, on March 9, 2025. Nearly 1,000 students with different abilities and support staff from 25 special schools came together for a day of sports, entertainment and camaraderie. Participants engaged in a variety of indoor games and activities adapted to showcase abilities rather than limitations.
Encouraging the participants while also ensuring that the entire event went on smoothly were hundreds of Lions, sporting their yellow service jackets. Several celebrities from the Malayalam film industry also attended, spending time with participants and cheering them on during competitions..
The day concluded with spirited performances featuring singing, dancing, and theatrical acts by the students. Many students had prepared for weeks to showcase their talents and this was clearly visible as they took to the stage with confidence
Lionathlon 2025 represents one of several District 318C initiatives focused on creating inclusive opportunities for people with different abilities. Plans are already underway for similar events in other parts of the district later this year.
