Serving Smiles Carnival: Leos of MD 3231 Create Magical Moments for 1,100 Children

The air crackles with excitement and echoes with laughter and delighted squeals as 1,100 underprivileged children from 35 institutions across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai gather on the grounds of DJ Doshi Gurukul School.

On January 5, Leos of MD 3231 turned the school campus into a vibrant celebration to bring a day full of fun, laughter, and hope to children who rarely get to enjoy such moments. The ‘Serving Smiles’ Carnival was inaugurated by local MLA Shri Parag Shah.

“The moment I saw the bouncy castles, I knew this would be the best day ever,” whispered eight-year-old Ravi from a local orphanage, a big smile on his face.

With support from an LCIF Leo Service Grant of US$5,000 and generous contributions from local Lions, a dedicated team of 475 Leo members from 40 Leo Clubs worked tirelessly to craft this flagship community service project.

Moments of Magic and Wonder

The grand carnival pulsed with energy. Children bounced between activity stations with unbridled enthusiasm. There were games to be played, arts and crafts to be created, magic shows and puppet shows to watch and technological wonders to explore at the Robotics Workshop.

The Planetarium Dome became an instant favorite, taking children on a 180° immersive journey through space – sparking new dreams and opening new possibilities. At the petting zone, children showed gentle care and wonder as they interacted with the animals.

The event concluded on a delicious note as children enjoyed freshly prepared burgers. Ten-year-old Apoorva couldn’t contain her excitement: “I’ve seen burgers on TV but never had one before!” she exclaimed.

Each child was given a parting gift – a reminder of a day that will remain in their memories for years to come.

“Serving Smiles has set a benchmark for hands-on community service, proving that small acts of kindness can make a big difference,” reflected Leo-Lion Akshay Ladage, President of Leo Multiple District 3231. “By blending fun and learning, this initiative serves as a beacon of hope and love, leaving the community inspired and uplifted.”

As twilight fell over Mumbai, 1,100 children returned to their institutions with full hearts and minds alight with possibilities. And 475 Leo members understood, perhaps more clearly than ever before, the true meaning of the Lions’ motto: We Serve.
